More than one in two Finns are interested in an e-bike as a company vehicle – can even replace a second car

According to a recent Helkama survey, more than one in two Finns are interested in getting an e-bike as an employer-provided vehicle. In addition, one in ten already live in a household where a second car has been replaced with an e-bike.

The popularity of e-biking is increasing in Finland. According to a recent survey by the bicycle manufacturer Helkama Velox, more than one in two Finns consider an e-bike to be an interesting and viable option for commuting.

Interest in e-bikes as company vehicles

According to the survey, 53% of the Finns would be interested in getting an e-bike as a company vehicle. About 2% already have an e-bike as an employer-provided vehicle. In addition, one in two respondents say that they think it would be possible to commute by e-bike.

Respondents who do not consider their commute to be possible by e-bike say that the distance being too long is the most common reason (16%).  Many respondents also report that they cannot afford an e-bike (10%) and that they think that other options are safer (5%).

“The survey shows that many Finns are interested in the benefits of commuting by bicycle, such as exercise and the freedom to choose schedules and routes as they wish. I would also guess that many people who have concerns over riding long distances have not tried an e-bike, as the ease and the possible distances compared to a regular bicycle can be a real surprise,” says Jussa Lauhamaa, Sales and Marketing Director at Helkama Velox.

Alternative to buying a car

Helkama’s survey also reveals that one in ten Finns already lives in a household where the need for another car has been met with an e-bike.

“When you choose the bike model and its equipment correctly and with your own needs in mind, an e-bike can be a very good second vehicle for the whole family. With an e-bike, you can transport a nice amount of cargo or, for example, a child to their hobby,” Lauhamaa says.

Helkama bicycles are manufactured in Finland and the company’s Hanko plant operates on fully fossil-free energy. Similarly, the aim is to keep the end product’s life cycle as long as possible by providing consumers with a comprehensive service network with expert partners.

“We have been emphasising sustainability in our production, supply chain and the well-being of our personnel for a long time, but we still have a lot to do. One challenging area is caused by materials, for example, as most of Helkama’s carbon footprint is due to the aluminium used in frames. We will actively explore the possibilities of using recycled aluminium and steel in our frames, and we have a bold goal of being completely carbon neutral already by 2025,” Lauhamaa says.

The survey was carried out by Syno International as an Omnibus survey between 1 and 7 June 2023. A total of 1,002 Finns over the age of 18 responded to the survey online. The sample is demographically representative of the population.
