Tips for safe and enjoyable winter cycling
As winter arrives, many cyclists move their bike into storage to wait for warmer weather. But what if we told you that winter cycling with an e-bike can be just as enjoyable as summer cycling? Here are a few tips for safe and comfortable winter cycling with your e-bike.
Choose tyres with a good grip
In winter, roads can be slippery and snowy. Make sure that the tyres of your e-bike are in good condition and inflated. In addition, we recommend purchasing winter tyres to ensure safety in slippery conditions. Tyres with a larger tread pattern or studs are suitable for winter cycling. The width of the tyre also matters: a narrow tyre sinks more easily in the snow and reacts to lumps, for example, while a wider tyre gives more extra grip.

Keep the battery warm
Cold air can affect battery performance, so avoid exposing the battery to freezing temperatures for long periods. Store and charge your battery in a warm place, preferably indoors, and make sure that the battery is well charged before you go.

How should the battery be stored when the e-bike is not in use?
✔ Always store and charge the battery in a dry and warm place.
✔ The battery should not be fully charged during storage, but it should also not be empty. A charge of around 70% is ideal, depending on the manufacturer.
✔ If you want to optimise storage, check the charge level and charge the battery approximately every 2–3 months. This keeps the battery awake during the winter.
✔ Never leave the battery to charge unattended, for example overnight.
Dress correctly and ensure visibility
Layering is key when you want to stay warm. Protect your face and hands from wind and cold. In addition, remember to be visible – it is important to have powerful lights on the bike, both front and rear. Do not forget about reflectors, either. Reflectors can be found on the sides of many winter tyres, but you can also use spoke-mounted versions. For extra visibility, use a high-visibility vest.

Keep the bike clean and maintained
In winter cycling, keeping the bike clean is emphasised, as the bike gets wet and muddy easily. Salt should also be washed away from time to time. In winter, purchasing mudguards is a profitable and small investment that allows you to conveniently convert the bike you have purchased as a summer bike for winter riding.

Explore the routes in advance
Did you know that some cities have routes designed for winter cycling? Explore alternative routes that can be better ploughed and safer for cycling. Always reserve extra riding time when setting off in winter conditions.
