Getting a company bike – this is how you can start using a company bike!

A company bike is a benefit offered by the employer to the employees that benefits both parties. So, how can I get a company bike? The employee is free to use the bike and can use it for both commuting and leisure time. If your workplace does not yet have a company bicycle benefit, you can submit a request to your supervisor or the HR department.

When a company bicycle benefit is offered at the workplace, the employer decides whether the benefit will be included as part of the salary or on top of the salary as a tax-free salary increase. The employer also decides whether to buy the bikes directly from a bike shop or to offer the benefit through a leasing company (more common option). In a leasing agreement, the employer also decides, for example, the price of bikes, the duration of the agreement, what happens after the agreement and what happens if the employee changes workplace.

Head out to the shops.

The process of getting a company bike begins when the employer has agreed on the practical matters with the leasing company and informed the employees of the company bike benefit. As an employee, it is then up to you to go get your company bike. Different leasing companies may have different restrictions on where you can buy your bike.

Select the company bike and accessories.

You can choose any company bike you like at the bicycle shop. The price limits set by the employer may impose restrictions on this, but the type of bike does not matter. You can buy an electric bike, a hybrid bike or a mountain bike, for example. Leasing agreements often also include fixed bike accessories, such as lights, a lock and mudguards. Insurance and servicing are also included in most leasing agreements. Of course, the exact information must always be checked with the employer.

Get the invoicing in order.

Once a suitable company bike and accessory package have been found, the bike dealer ensures the right to invoice with the leasing company. Once the invoicing is in order, they can release the bike to you.
