Sustainability in Helkama

Helkama is a 120-year-old Finnish family-owned company that manufactures all its electric bikes in Finland, at its factory in Hanko. Helkama has been manufacturing e-bikes for 25 years. Helkama has a total of about 75 employees, of which about 50 work in production. As a Finnish company, Helkama pays its taxes in Finland and wants to take care of its social responsibility by, among other things, ensuring the well-being, safety and training of its employees and employing people from different backgrounds.

Helkama’s e-bike is made to withstand all weather conditions

The most important factor in the sustainability of an e-bike is that it is used as much and as long as possible. Helkama’s electric bikes are designed and manufactured with Finland’s changing weather conditions in mind, so you can cycle all year round – and nature will thank you every time you leave your car at home.

Helkama knows every bike

At the Helkama factory, we know exactly what and whose components each bike is made from. The components are sourced from large, world-class players with their own precise quality processes. This also means that Helkama e-bike maintenance is not limited to a lack of spare parts or support: if you need help, you can get it from Helkama dealers or directly from Helkama.

The factory in Hanko takes care of recycling and energy friendliness

All Helkama’s e-bikes are manufactured at the factory in Hanko, where the company strives to be environmentally friendly in even the smallest ways. There is almost no waste in the production of the bikes, so by far the largest part of the waste from the factory is packaging material for the components – mainly cardboard. Mixed waste generation is remarkably low and the recycling rate of the factory’s waste is around 95%. Helkama bicycles are manufactured using solar electricity. The largest solar power plant in Hanko is installed on the roof of the Helkama factory.

Recycling is carefully managed

We are constantly working to ensure that as much of our factory waste as possible is either recycled or reused. The manufacture of lithium batteries for e-bikes is a burden on the environment, so it is extremely important to take care of the condition of the batteries and to recycle them correctly. Helkama has an agreement with a service company that takes care of battery recycling.

How can cyclists take responsibility?

Maintain your bike regularly, charge the battery correctly and recycle it. The manufacture of each lithium battery puts a strain on the environment, so it is important that the battery lasts as long as possible.
